Basic Tips on Coffee Making

Storage

Keep your beans in an airtight container, out of the light in a dark cupboard in a temperature of 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Coffee is best brewed fresh, so when it comes to storing coffee beans for long periods of time, simply don’t do it.

Avoid Cheap Filters

Bargain-priced paper coffee filters yield inferior coffee, according to the experts. Look for "oxygen-bleached" or "dioxin-free" paper filters. Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a long-lived gold-plated filter. These are reputed to deliver maximum flavour, but may let sediment through if the coffee is ground too finely.

Don't Skimp on the Coffee

The standard measure for brewing coffee of proper strength is 2 level tablespoons per 6-ounce cup or about 2 3/4 tablespoons per 8-ounce cup. Tricks like using less coffee and hotter water to extract more cups per pound tend to make for bitter brews.

Refreshing Coffee for Warm Weather

Cold-Brewed Coffee

Coffee brewed slowly in cold water is less acidic than hot-brewed coffee. You can pour this concentrate straight over ice or microwave half a mug of coffee and then add a half cup of boiling water for quick hot coffee. Develop your own ratio of coffee to water for your custom brew.

This ingenious recipe starts with coffee ice cubes! You'll blend the coffee ice cubes with soy milk, chocolate syrup, a little peanut butter and some vanilla extract until frothy.

Time-Honoured Ways of Coffee Preparation

  • Espresso

    The espresso, also known as a short black, is approximately one ounce of highly concentrated coffee. Although simple in appearance, it can be difficult to master.

    Double Espresso

    A double espresso may also be listed as doppio, which is the Italian word for double. This drink is highly concentrated and strong.

    Macchiato

    The word “macchiato” means mark or stain. This is the reference to the mark that steamed milk leaves on the surface of the espresso as it is dashed into the drink. Flavouring syrups are often added to the drink according to customer preference.

  • Long Macchiato

    Often confused with a standard macchiato, the long macchiato is a taller version and will usually be identifiable by its distinct layers of coffee and steamed milk.

    Cortado

    The cortado takes the macchiato one step further by evenly balancing the espresso with warm milk to reduce the acidity.
